What do you need to create this Effect?

All you need is a Timelapse of a sunset or sunrise. The effect works best if the Timelapse shows the full transition from day to night or the other way around.

How to create the slices in After Effects

Follow these steps to create the Timeslice Effect in Adobe After Effects:

  1. Create a new composition with your Timelapse

  2. Duplicate the Timelapse layer & move it 20 frames to the right

  3. Apply the Linear Wipe effect to the duplicated layer & add a value of 10% in the Transition Completion property

  4. Duplicate the new layer again, so you have three layers, and move it another 20 frames

  5. Change the value of the Linear Wipe Effect on the new layer to 20%

  6. Repeat this process of duplicating and adding 10% to the Linear Effect until you have 10 layers in your composition

Your composition should look like this:

How to create a seamless loop of the Timeslice

To create the seamless loop of the Timeslice, select all layers and duplicate them (cmd+D). Move the duplicates to the top of the stack. Duplicate the 10 selected layers again and move the layers to the top.

Then rearrange the stacks so when the bottom layer of one stack ends, the bottom layer of the stack below begins.

Move the in point of the composition to the beginning of the middle bottom layer (layer 20) and the end point to end of the most bottom layer. After this step your Compositon should look like this:

Now time-reverse all layer of the middle stack & trim the Composition to the Work Area and ready is your Timeslice loop!
