Create 3D Objects from 2D Images in After Effects: A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Want to add a 3D element to your After Effects project without using plugins? This tutorial will guide you through the process of transforming a 2D image into a 3D object. Perfect for creating detailed 3D scenes or adding creative elements to your videos.

This method works great for anything that is square or rectangular shaped, so containers or buildings are perfect. If you do not have a video or photo you can download the image I used in this Tutorial or find your own in the Google image search.

0: Download this PNG file to follow this guide

Step 1: Prepare Your Image

Import your 2D image into After Effects and create a new composition. Position the timeline cursor to the desired frame where the 3D object's animation should end. Now you have two options:

Step 2: Create the 3D Object's Components

Option 1: Save the frame as Photoshop layers (Composition/Save Frame As/Photoshop layers) and open the file in Photoshop. Use this option if you have a logo or other distracting elements and remove them.

1: Front Element of the container

Use the transform tools to correct the perspective and straighten all edges. Name the first layer front, duplicate it and name it side. For the side layer create a square that matches the height of the front layer. For the container I also moved the right corner the the left to form the square to make it look realistic, but this step depends on your individual image.

2: Side element of the container

Save the Photoshop file and import it back into After Effects with editable layer styles.

3: Importing the Photoshop File

Option 2: If the 2D element already has a clean surface (like a building) no need to go to Photoshop. Just create a Mask around the object for the front. Duplicate the layer and create a square Mask for the sides of the object.

Step 3: Assemble the 3D Object in After Effects

Position the layers in your After Effects composition. Make the front layer 3D and adjust its anchor point to the bottom of the object with the Anchor Point Tool (Shortcut Y). Duplicate this layer and name it bottom.

4: Make the layer 3D and move anchor point

Rotate the bottom layer -90 degrees on the X-axis to create the floor.

5: Creating the bottom of the container

Duplicate the front layer, name it back and move it so it matches the corner of the floor to create the back wall.

6: Creating the back wall

Duplicate the floor layer and position it at the top to create the ceiling.

7: Creating the top layer

Make the side visible and a 3D layer. Rotate it -90 degrees on the Y-axis. Position the side layer on the left side of the object, once again making sure that all edges allign perfectly. Duplicate the side layer and position it on the right side to finish the object.

8: Creating the side walls

Step 4: Organize and Animate Your 3D Object

To easily control and animate your 3D object, create a null object and position it in the centre of the object. Use different camera angles to see "inside" the container and position the Null object proberly.

9: Placing the Null Object in the center

Then parent all layers to it. By animating the null object's position, scale, and rotation, you can bring your 3D object to life and animate as desired.

10: Connecting the Null Object

Tips for Optimal Results:

  • Clean Image Preparation: Ensure your image has clean edges and is free of artifacts.

  • Accurate Layer Positioning: Precisely align the layers to create a seamless 3D object.

  • Effective Animation: Utilize keyframes and expressions to create dynamic and engaging animations.

I hope this tutorial has empowered you to elevate your After Effects projects with stunning 3D objects. Remember, with a little creativity and patience, you can achieve incredible results.
